A plastic bottle is transformed into an engineering material: Sipchem InnoVent from Lausanne is showcasing the Meras range at Fakuma – compounds made from post-consumer PET with a recycled content of between 53 and 96 per cent.
Engineering plastics today must meet significantly higher standards than they did just a few years ago. In addition to strict technical and economic criteria, it is essential to ensure integration into existing manufacturing processes whilst preserving resources.
This is where Sipchem InnoVent comes in. Based at the EPFL Innovation Park in Lausanne, the company develops compounds based on recycled post-consumer PET that combine technical performance, competitiveness and resource efficiency.
Every Meras compound begins its life with something familiar: a used PET bottle. Instead of ending up as waste or in a landfill, these bottles are collected via established recycling streams. First, they are sorted to remove labels and contaminants, and then thoroughly washed to restore their purity.
In the next step, Sipchem InnoVent SA utilises its own upcycling technology to transform the plastic into high-performance Meras r-PET compounds.
Impact on the environment, safety and health have been central in the development of Meras r-PET. For this reason, PFAS, BPA, styrene and halogens have been avoided.
Reducing the carbon footprint by up to 80 per cent.
With the Meras product family, the company offers materials which, depending on the product, contain between 53 and 96 per cent recycled content whilst reducing the carbon footprint by up to 80 per cent compared with comparable virgin materials, without compromising on technical properties.
